Radio Play: “It’s Turnout, Periodt”
I’m getting a bit more brave with writing for my Living Radio project—and while the project is always timely, this play turned out a bit prescient.
It’s Turnout, Periodt was inspired by a Gothamist news article raising the possibility that things might look grim for (now) Mayor-elect Mamdani’s chances, because older people were turning out for early voting in big numbers. With Living Radio’s mandate being “revisionist current events,” I flipped the fact that “Voters 55 and older currently make up slightly more than 51% of the early voting turnout, with the largest single share of the vote coming from voters 65 to 74 years old,” to be in favor of younger voters, instead.
It was fun to simultaneously revisit my campaign days, call attention to the danger of GOP voter suppression efforts (every tactic mentioned in the piece is real), and, as you’ll hear, take the piss out of Gen Alpha slang, which this elder Millennial finds cringe AF.
Actors Tyrus Holden, David Michael Kirby, & Shari Hazlett gave a super fun performance, under Shari’s direction—listen to it at the Living Radio website, and check out some of Steve Prue’s killer photos below.
